Item Description
Created and manufactured by Solo Scientific in the USA to be used to start your campfires (click on images to enlarge). This model Aurora Fire Starter (Patent Pending) is equipped with our tungsten, carbide, cobalt Super Alloy Striking Blade that will never dull! Note: Super Alloy Striking Blade not shown in above photo. Our goal was to design and manufacture the best all-around survival fire starter in the world and we have absolutely done it! These New Models are AEROSPACE QUALITY! Our Aurora Fire Starter is a true survival tool and will work in any environment that will support life! Always be prepared! Our Aurora Fire Starter will start a lifetime of campfires for most users.

Our Aurora Fire Starter is rugged, and is designed for survival. Our Aurora Fire Starter uses a large 1/4" (.635cm) diameter composite flint steel rod that has magnesium built into it. The built-in Striking Blade could be a lifesaver! You can wear our lightweight Aurora Fire Starter on your key ring or around your neck on a lanyard and if you are ever separated from your pack or knife you will still have everything you need to start a fire. The built-in Super Alloy Striking Blade is made from a tungsten, carbide, cobalt alloy that takes off enough material to start a fire but will not cause excessive wear. This new Super Alloy Striking Blade will not dull and is harder than any knife blade you will find. Our built-in Striking Blade is part of the unit and will not get caught on equipment, break off, or rattle while in combat, or while hunting - like other fire starters that have a blade hanging from a string. Our Aurora Fire Starter is designed to function wet or dry, is machined from solid light-weight aircraft aluminum (NO PLASTIC!), is knurled for grip, and will not break when you need it most. Our Aurora Fire Starter has an overall length of 3.6" (9.14cm), a diameter of .625" (1.59cm), weighs 1/10lb. (45g), has an o-ring seal to prevent the housing from unscrewing and provide protection from corrosion in salt and fresh water environments. Our Aurora Fire Starter is designed to last a life time and provide you with fire when the emergency situation occurs. Using Your Aurora

To start a fire using our Aurora Fire Starter you: 1.Place your fire starting material on the ground (plain cotton balls, dryer lint, toilet paper, birch bark, milk weed fluff, burdock, or fine dry grass work ,but any fine dry tinder usually found in the wild can be used). 2. Open your Aurora Fire Starter. 3. Scrape the composite flint steel/magnesium rod with the built-in Super Alloy Striking Blade (note: it may be necessary to scrape off protective coating on rod first with striking blade) while aiming the hot burning sparks at your tinder and you have FIRE!

"This is one of my favorite new items and I'm very excited to be able to sell it. I have been playing with my new magnesium fire starter quite a bit over the past few days, starting fires all over the place. What's great about it is that it has the hot burning magnesium and the flint in one piece. You don't have two different pieces that can separate like other magnesium fire starters and have the chance of losing one piece of your fire starting kit. Some people just prefer a flint bar and then scrape it and throw the sparks at some tinder. With this new magnesium fire starter, when you throw the sparks just like you would with a plain flint bar, the magnesium sparks stay lit for several seconds and makes it even easier to start a fire. Why wouldn't you want to make your flint fire starter even better? The magnesium and flint chunks throw out just like flint, but stay smoldering like little chunks of fire rather than shavings of magnesium that can blow away before you get your sparks onto it. Plus, you can strike it as many times as you like over and over again thereby throwing a continuous shower of super hot smoldering pieces of magnesium and flint at your fire bed. The larger chunks seem to stick where you throw them as well." ó Tom Sciacca, President of CampingSurvival.com

This magnesium fire starter is designed to function under the most extreme conditions and is made from corrosion resistant high strength materials, and, will be your faithful fire starter for many years.

Latest news from the manufacturer of the Aurora Fire Starter (April 16, 2008):
ďWe can build the Aurora Fire Starters with the larger rod and I have already completed all of the drawings. We just have not set a date for production yet. We have been very busy manufacturing the current model fast enough to fill all of the orders. There are now Aurora Fire Starters in every state including Hawaii, France, Israel, Italy, Russia, and Germany. We also plan to offer black anodized Aurora Fire Starters in the future. Also, you mentioned that you carry your unit without the blade tube.Ē

(I mentioned that I like to carry the fire starter without the case and just use the back of my Leatherman Multitool saw blade to scrape it rather than the scraper privided with the tool. This produces a larger amount of sparks, but does decrease the life of the product because your scraping away more material. Tom Sciacca, President JHL Supply / CampingSurvival.com)

ďOne other benefit that the blade tube has is when the unit is screwed closed and locked is it gives the Aurora Fire Starter an advantage over other fire starters in salt water environments. In Most of the fire starters you sell and are on the market the rods are not sealed tight or are completely exposed."

(The Aurora fire starter has a very tight seal due to the high quality material and the o-ring at the seal.)

"This is ok in a fresh water environment but a major disadvantage in a salt water environment(remember your friend the Navy Seal). Most people are not versed in electrochemisty and are unaware of this fact. If you can imagine being lost or on an adventure for extended periods of time in different environments and only using the Aurora when you need to start a fire you will see over time that we really have taken a lot into consideration when we designed the unit. One of the main advantages of the built in blade (and now improved with new blade) is good enough spark to start a fire with less wear. I have personally destroyed many rods very quickly on other fire starters using my serrated knife.Ē

» Watch Magnesium Fire Starter Experiment Video

To learn more about why the new Aurora Fire starter is great not only because of the innovative combining of a good quantity of magnesium and the flint rod together in on material, but also because of the protection of the product itself that it offers click here. The video your about to see, shows an experiment that shows what salt water can do to other fire starters and why itís important to have your new Aurora Fire Starter inside it o-ring sealed case.

Experiment Directions

This experiment was designed by Solo Scientific and should not be done indoors or by anyone under the age of 21. Solo Scientific is not responsible for any damage or injury caused by doing this experiment. This experiment was designed to show one of the many advantages of the Aurora Fire Starter over one of the most common fire starters on the market. Follow the instructions below and you will watch one of the most common fire starters in the world disintegrate before your eyes and produce hydrogen gas that could be explosive - at the wrong time and place - and ignite your survival equipment or clothing. The Aurora Fire Starter has an o-ring seal that protects the fire starting rod from potentially corrosive salt water.

Materials:
1. Container large enough to house one standard block type magnesium fire starter.
2. Table salt
3. Warm water
4. (1) block type magnesium fire starter
5. (1) match

Procedure:
1. Dissolve 1/4 cup of table salt for every 1.5 cups of warm water inside your container.
2. Place (1) block type magnesium fire starter in the salt water solution.
3. You will notice after a short period of time that bubbles will begin to form at the surface of the solution as the block type magnesium fire starter begins to disintegrate. The fire starting rod will fall off of the unit within 24 hours if the unit remains in the solution and eventually disintegrate to nothing due to salt water exposure. This experiment simulates what could happen in a salt water environment should your equipment become wet by salt water.
4. Next light a match and touch one of the larger bubbles formed at the surface of the salt solution with the match. You will notice that the hydrogen gas formed ignites! This experiment is fun, but obviously dangerous and undesirable inside your pocket or equipment while in the field during a survival situation.

Itís important to have a good fire starter. Itís also important to have some good tinder. We sell some very good tinders here. However, it is also important to use your fire starter at home before you go outdoors. A great project for the budding outdoorsman is making your own tinder. Try the cotton ball and vaseline tinder method. Just get a cotton ball and some vaseline. Get the vaseline throughout the cotton ball, but donít oversoak it so itís too wet with vaseline. Youíll need to pull the cotton ball apart a bit to expose the individual threads and throw a spark from you new fire starter. Youíll be amazed at how quickly it catches fire and how long and hot it burns. This is a great project for scout troops as well.

The homemade cotton ball and vaseline tinder is great, but can be messy. Go ahead and also try one or more of our compressed tinders. Another great project is to try different fire starters and tinders to see which works best for you. Again, the bottom line is to learn how to make a fire with your fire starter long before you have to start a fire in a survival situation.

Customer Testimonial

My name is Michael Bruneio and I recently ordered the Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter, along with some other small items.

I am writing to compliment the lightning-like speed with which I received my order. I received my materials in two days from the time of order! Amazon doesn't even ship that fast!

But primarily, I want to take the opportunity to sing the praises of this remarkable Aurora fire starter. It is so easy to use! I am an avid wilderness canoeist, and I regret not having one twenty years ago when I first went into the bush! It would have saved me many "waterproof" match purchases, and spared my fellow campers from hearing a lot of cuss words!

I followed Tom's advice and took a single, untreated cotton ball, placed it in my sink, and within six strikes, I was able to light the cotton ball. (It took six tries due to it being my first time with this product and experimenting with the right angles.) My second attempt was more successful, and it only took one strike to light the cotton ball! Since then, I'm able to get a successful flame from 1-2 strikes! Again I ask, "Where was this godsend 20 years ago???!!!" I know all too well how frustrating it is to have the shaved magnesium chips fly away suddenly during a gust of wind, and being able to continue throwing both magnesium and sparks at a stubborn fire is a huge help.

You may anticipate future orders of the Aurora from me, as I will happily purchase spares and gifts for my outdoor friends. The only improvement I would make is including a rugged lanyard or carabiner.

Thanks again for the great service and the great product. Please feel free to use this email as testimony to the effectiveness of the Aurora on your website and elsewhere.

By the way, the Maya Sticks are awesome, too! You can count on me ordering many more of these!

Have a great day!

Warmest Regards,

Michael

Latest news from the manufacturer of the Aurora Fire Starter (August 13, 2008):
ďTom,

As I promised you our goal here at Solo Scientific is to produce high quality products made in the USA. We are very exited about the new model Aurora Fire Starters. Although at first glance they may look the same after closer inspection you will discover many improvements. The machining overall is 100% better and we have totally improved our manufacturing process, The knurl is now much cleaner and consistent looking, where the o-ring mounts I have redesigned that area so that the o-ring seats better and will stay in place better when the unit is open, the upper and lower ends of the unit are chamfered (rounded) to eliminate any sharp edges, the threading is 100% better and is smoother, and the keyring/lanyard hole is larger than the original units. We also have recently announced a New Super Alloy Striking Blade that is so hard that only a diamond blade can cut them. We began producing and testing these blades some time ago with the military in mind and I am happy to say they are great! These new blades (3rd generation) will be available as an accessory in mid to late August 2008. Yes you will be getting the new units in your next order. I am very excited and proud of the quality we have achieved - I can't wait to send you one for inspection.

Thanks, Andy"

-I received the latest shipment of Aurora Magnesium Fire Starters from Andy this week and they are awesome. It's funny that I saw nothing wrong with the Aurora's that I had before. To me they were perfect. However, when comparing them side by side, I can see a difference. It's not that they even needed improving, Andy is just an amazing guy and makes super high quality products. Again, I highly recommend this "fire starter on steroids"! Go ahead and get one. I would love even more feedback. So far it's been all good. From Navy Seals and all the other military services to hunters, campers, survivalists and everyone else.
