Anodization is simply a quickly induced man made protective oxidation coating on the aluminum. Aluminum naturally develops an oxidation coating over time that also protects the aluminum, but the layer is not as thick as the man made oxidation layer produced through anodization. The black color is a dye added during the anodization process. I decided to do the black anodization mainly for its anti-reflective properties for military use. The added protection is just a bonus because a non-anodized Aurora Fire Starter would last the customer a lifetime. Our knurled finish on the Aurora Fire Starter enhances the anti-reflective properties of the black anodization and the combination is excellent! We have received hundreds of requests from military personal for black Aurora Fire Starters for obvious reasons and I felt that we had waited long enough. There are now many Aurora Fire Starters used in the field and I felt it was our responsibility to make them anti-reflective. Now that we have the Black Anodized Aurora Fire Starters in stock I wish we did it sooner. They really are spectacular in both function and looks!
This magnesium fire starter (patent pending) is rugged and designed for the outdoors enthusiast. The Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter uses a large 1/4" diameter composite flint steel rod that has magnesium built into it. Has a guided built in striking blade (no need to dull your expensive hunting knife) that maximizes the sparks and insures the ignition of any suitable fire starting material/ tinder. This product is designed to function wet or dry and is made from corrosion resistant high strength materials (no plastic!). The Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter has an overall length of 3.5", weighs 1/10th of a pound, and can be attached to your key ring so it is always there when you need it. The Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter is made in the USA and is designed to last a life time.
"This is one of my favorite new items and I'm very excited to be able to sell it. I have been playing with my new Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter quite a bit over the past few days, starting fires all over the place. What's great about it is that it has the hot burning magnesium and the flint in one piece. You don't have two different pieces that can separate like other magnesium fire starters and have the chance of losing one piece of your fire starting kit. Some people just prefer a flint bar and then scrape it and throw the sparks at some tinder. With this new magnesium fire starter, when you throw the sparks just like you would with a plain flint bar, the magnesium sparks stay lit for several seconds and makes it even easier to start a fire. Why wouldn't you want to make your flint fire starter even better? The magnesium and flint chunks throw out just like flint, but stay smoldering like little chunks of fire rather than shavings of magnesium that can blow away before you get your sparks onto it. Plus, you can strike it as many times as you like over and over again thereby throwing a continuous shower of super hot smoldering pieces of magnesium and flint at your fire bed. The larger chunks seem to stick where you throw them as well."

Using Your Aurora Fire Starter
To use your Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter unscrew the larger of the two sections that make up the starter. Doing this will reveal the fire starting rod enclosed. Hold the smaller section of the product in one hand and the larger section of it in the other hand as shown in figure 1. Next position the striking blade mounted on the top of the larger section of the starter against the fire starting rod so that the fire starting rod rests inside the 45 degree angled notch as shown in figure 2. This places the fire starting rod in the optimum position to start a fire. While holding the smaller section of the Aurora magnesium fire starter firmly in one hand scrape the fire starting rod with the top corner edge of the striking blade (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT) in a fast smooth manner while pressing firmly against the blade and maintaining the optimum 45 degree angle. You will notice that when done properly the Aurora Fire Starter will emit incredibly bright and hot sparks that will burn and ignite any suitable fire starting material. We recommend that you have fun getting to know your Aurora magnesium fire starter by igniting the fire starting material included - only a small amount of the included material is needed. Cotton balls and dryer filter lint are great fire starting material! Note: After prolonged use the striking blade can be flipped over to reveal a fresh striking surface. To do this simply remove the top screw holding the striking blade in place, flip the blade horizontally, and then re-secure the striking blade with screw - the striking blade may also be sharpened.
Caution: The Aurora magnesium fire starter is not a toy! Keep the Aurora out of reach of children and do not use or demonstrate the Aurora indoors or near any combustible material. Doing so could result in injury, structural damage, or death. We're not responsible for any damages caused by use of the Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter.
"I actually like to use the back of the saw blade on my Leatherman multitool as my striker. It scrapes off a larger amount of magnesium and sparks. The manufacturer recommends you use the tool provided because it scrapes off a smaller amount of material and makes the product last longer. I'm not worried about that. I have scraped mine dozens of times over the past few days and have only seen a small amount of material has been scraped from the product. This magnesium fire starter will make thousands of fires. The manufacturer has one that he's used about 2000 times and he says there's at least double that left."
