B&M Brown Bread with Raisons may seem like some newfangled, space-age contrivance for those who are unfamiliar with brown bread in a can. But as those lucky enough to have been reared on this wholesome treat can tell you, it's a throwback to old New England.

B&M History
The Burnham & Morrill Company was founded in 1967 by George Burnham and Charles S. Morrill. Their first plant opened in Portland, Maine where they began their first product lines which included canned meats, vegetables and fish; specifically: roast beef, mutton, pork, lamb, roast chicken, roast turkey, carrots, turnips, a few other vegetables, herring, clams, and lobsters. During their early years of operation, B&M solved the difficulties of canning corn and their canned corn business quickly boomed. At one point, there were as many as nineteen corn canneries scattered throughout Maine. Since that time, B&G food purchased B&M and five other food brands from the Pillsbury Company. While B&G has increased B&M's public image, they have maintained B&M's proud heritage. Today, B&M still bakes its beans in the traditional manner, in open pots inside brick ovens is a process that gives the beans a firmness and authentic taste far superior to modern, cooked in the can, "baked" beans.
Canned long shelf life food labels have tendency to peel off over time, especially if they are kept for years in your basement. In order to prevent this, put a coat of shellac over the label as soon as you get them. This way, you will always know what's in the can years later.
| NOTE: We just received a mistaken over-shipment on a large quantity of this B&M Brown Bread. Rather than sending it back, we're blowing them out at a discounted price. This price is a limited time price and only applies to our current stock. |
10/24/08 - We recently picked up some great long shelf life canned foods and they are selling even better than we expected. I decided to do a taste test today on a few of them and we're all shocked at how good they are. I opened up a can each of the bacon, turkey chunks, pork sausage and the bread. None of us liked the bread. However all the rest are awesome! I think we all like the bacon the best. There is quite a bit of full bacon strips (not dehydrated and ready to eat right out of the can) wrapped in wax paper in the can. I eat all kinds of crazy things, but Lisa, David and Loree also loved the canned turkey, canned pork sausage and the canned bacon. It surprised me how tasty and full of flavor they all are. In fact, we're all filing up on it and are having it for lunch today. The three cans of meats is more than enough food for the 4 of us. The bread isn't horrible. We all agree that it kind of tastes like molasses bread that has been in a can. I know, not a very good description, but it's the best we can do for now. The bread is moist and a little crumbly, but doesn't compare to the full, rich flavor of the other canned foods we tested. Over time, we might do taste tests on more of our canned foods, but I hope this gives you a good idea of all our canned foods since they come from the same company.

NEW RECIPES
Recently Lisa made some very tasty food with our canned meats and canned broths and brought it in for all of us to share. Please see below a couple great recipes that had us all asking for seconds. Maybe it’s too much (or maybe not), but I would even add our canned bacon to both recipes too. Plus we also sell the big cans of spices as well as smaller spice selections such as these.
