SteriPEN™ is the only portable water purifier that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to destroy waterborne microbes. Whether your source is a woodland brook or an overseas hotel tap, SteriPEN purifies clear water by destroying viruses, bacteria and protozoa—including Giardia and Cryptosporidium—in seconds. Carry a SteriPEN to disinfect water wherever you travel, hike, camp or trek. It’s the fastest route to pure, safe drinking water anywhere.
Proven Technology in the Lab of the Steripen
UV light destroys the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and parasitic protozoa.
SteriPEN® water purifiers are fast. They are proven to eliminate viruses, bacteria and protozoa in 0.5 liters (16 oz) in 48 seconds. Compare this to chemicals like chlorine that take up to 4 hours to do this job or iodine, which can’t eliminate some protozoa at all! SteriPEN’s speed means you can drink quickly.
SteriPEN® water purifiers are light. The SteriPEN Classic weighs less than 225 g (8 ounces) with batteries and the Adventurer/Traveler family weighs less than 110 g (4 ounces). Compare this to pump filters that weigh up to a pound or more! SteriPEN’s light weight makes it easy to pack and carry in everything from a purse to an expedition pack.
SteriPEN® water purifiers are easy to use. Just push the button once for a liter (or quart) or twice for half a liter (or pint) then put it in water until the indicator turns green. SteriPEN's integrated temperature sensor and microprocessor determine the duration of the exposure. SteriPEN's liquid sensors insure that the timer administers the correct duration. It’s all automatic after you push the button. Compare this to using test strips and timers with chemicals or untangling hoses and balancing bottles with pump filters. When you get water from a tap in a foreign hotel to drink or brush your teeth, the easy-to-use SteriPEN is just the tool for the job.
SteriPEN® water purifiers have been tested by numerous laboratories in varying conditions. These labs include the University of Arizona, University of Maine, University of Oregon, and The School of Occupational and Public Health at Ryerson University in Canada. In all cases, SteriPEN water purifiers exceeded the United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for safety.

Microbiological Testing of the Steripen
At HYDRO-PHOTON we believe thorough testing is essential to the development of safe and reliable products. As a result we have conducted a wide range of testing both in house and at independent laboratories and test facilities. Steripen testing has focussed on three general areas: microbiological, electronic and mechanical.
Microbiological testing of the Steripen has been conducted at the University of Arizona, the University of Maine, the Oregon Health Sciences University and at Hydro-Photon. To date SteriPEN™ has been tested against: E. coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Poliovirus, Rotavirus, Klebsiella terrigena, Streptococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis (vegitative and spore), common yeast, Coliphage MS2, Giardia and Cryptosporidum.
Testing shows that SteriPEN™ meets the standard as set forth in the U.S. EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers.
SteriPEN™ has been shown to destroy in excess of 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses and 99.9% protozoa. For full text of SteriPEN™ test reports Click here.
