Tool Logic SL Pro Series Folding Knives

The new SL Pro Series offers tough steel construction and interchangeable components.

Q: What kind of steel is found in Tool Logic products? A: Tool Logic typically uses a Medium Carbon Stainless Steel called 420J2.

Q: Why do you use this type of steel? A: Steel is made primarily of iron and carbon. Most modern steels also contain several additional elements such as chromium, molybdenum etc. By changing the ratio of the carbon and these various additives the steel can be given different properties. For instance a larger chromium content will increase the “stainless” quality of the material. However it will make the steel less able to take and hold an edge. In contrast, adding more carbon will allow the steel to become harder and better able to take and hold an edge, but it will rust more easily. 420J2 steel offers a good balance between edge holding and resistance to rust.

Q: What is the Rockwell Hardness of the blades? A: When steel is heat treated it achieves a certain hardness. The recommended hardness varies with the carbon content of the steel. The harder the steel, the longer lasting the edge, however the trade-off is it's more difficult to resharpen. hardness is measured on the Rockwell Scale (higher numbers are harder). The hardness range for 420J2 steel is about RC50. It offers a blade that can take a sharp edge yet is reasonably easy to resharpen if it becmes dull.

Q: What is Zytel®? A: Zytel®? is a material made by DuPont. It is nylon reinforced with glass fiber (typically 33% glass fiber). It's a very tough and stable composite that is unaffected by most solvents or even gasoline.

Q: Where is the Phillips (+) screwdriver in the Tool Lite Deluxe and ICE Lite II? A: The screwdriver component in these items has three screwdriver functions. There is a large flat blade screwdriver and on the opposite end the steel is angled so that it fits inside a Phillips (+) screw head. Even though the blade is flat it can tighten and loosen Phillips (+) screws very effectively. This screwdriver is also ground very thin at the point so that it can be used on fine eyeglass screws.

Q: Why are there red LEDs in the Tool Lite, ICE Lite and Ultralite. Why can’t they be other colors or white? A: These ultra-slim designs are only 4 mm (about 1/8”) thick. They contain the thinnest batteries available at just 1.6mm thick. There is space for only one 3 volt battery. The LED must also be less than 4 mm diameter. The most powerful LED that can be driven by a single 3 volt battery is the 3mm superbright red LED found the Tool Lite, ICE Lite and Ultralite models. It is genuinely surprising how bright these tiny LEDs are when viewed in total darkness. The biggest benefit of the red LED is that its light will not affect night vision. Bright white LED's are now available but they require more than 3 volts to operate at full power. Light output from white LEDs is also very limited in sizes below 5mm diameter (which require 3mm LED's). So these LEDs are not suitable for our cards. The brilliant LED module found in our SL Series and the new TracLite has a 5mm white LED and is powered by four 1.5 volt button cell batteries.

Q: Where are Tool Logic products made? A: The majority of our products are made in SEKI, Japan. Seki is a small town high in the mountains above Nagoya in Gifu prefecture. It is the traditional center of knife and sword making in Japan and is still home to some of the finest makers in the world. During the past ten years tremendous changes have taken place in the cutlery and small tools market. First, Taiwan became a dominant force in folding knives and multi-tools by offering high quality at very affordable prices. The Wine Companion, Office Companion, Golf Cards and Notecard are made by top factories in Taiwan. Today it is difficult to go to a store and not find something "Made in China". Like Japanese and Taiwanese makers before them, the better Chinese cutlery and tool factories are rapidly gaining knowledge of quality production methods. The new TracLite is our first product made in China.
