Water FilterWhy Do You Need a Water Filter?

Many freshwater lakes and streams have been found to be contaminated with various waterborn protasoa, bacteria and viruses. Most common among these is Giardia Lamblia-a microscopic parasite which invades the small intestines and can cause ailments such as nausea, dysentry and severe abdominal cramps. This affliction, sometimes called Beaver Fever, can cause considerable discomfort.

Authorities in many parts of the world, including the United States and Canada, recommend purifying, filtering or boiling your drinking water.

Using a water filter will protect against Giardia and other organisms of similar size. And, it has the added advantages of being fast and not affecting the fresh water taste.

Why the Coghlan Water Filter?

Water Filter This lightweight water filter unit provides protection against Giardia and other amoeba as well as organisms of similae size or large such as tapeworm eggs, or nematodes.

1. Water Filter - The positively sealed cartridge filters out all particals and micro organisms down to a nominal 2 micron level. It can filter up to 400 quarts of water, depending on water clarity.

2. Pump - This simple ball-type two-way unit provides sufficient pressure to easily maintain the recommended flow rate. Some seepage around the plunger may occur. This is a design characteristic which in no way affects the reliability of the pump.

3. Discharge Tube - A 24" plastic tube fits the tapered hole in the head of the pump. A spring weight is attached to anchor the tube in a storage container.

4. Straw - A 6" tube is supplied which can be fitted directly to the filter allowing the user direct access to drink fresh water as a water filter.

5. Adapter Tube - This 14" tube allows the user to pump excess water out of the filter prior t packing or storage.

How to Use the Coghlan Water Filter

WITH THE PUMP: Fit the discharge tube into the tapered hole in the head of the pump. Place the weighted end in a container. Connect the water filter to the pump by pressing the 1-1/2" tube on the top of the filter into the bottom end of the pump shaft. There is a 1/4" insert in this tube to insure a snug fit. Immerse the filter in the water source. Pull up on the plunger of the pump, thus drawing water into and through the filter. Push down on the plunger forcing water through the tubing and into your container. For best results the flow rate should not exceed 1 quart in 1.5 minutes (a comfortable pumping rate). Vertical operation will insure the ball check valves operate properly.

AS A STRAW:Remove the 1-1/2" connector tube fromt the water filter. Fit the 6" "straw" tube to the top of the filter. Immerse the filter directly into the water source or, for convenience put water into another container and immerse the filter. Use the tube as you would any straw.

SELECTION OF WATER SOURCE: The clearer the water source the closer you will come to the optimum performance and life of our filter. When convenient, allow heavy solids to settle in a container and then pump from the top of the container. If time doesn't alooe, pre-filter through a coffee filter. Avoid using muddy water as it will substantialy reduce the capacity and life of the water filter.

FILTER REPLACEMENTS: The water filter and housing are factory assembled and should not be taken apart. At each end of the filter element there is an elastimeric seal wich accommodates minor dimensional variations and yet prevents by-passing of the filter element. When a build-up of sediment and/or micro organisms significantly restrics flow, the filter should be replaced. Replacement filters are available #C8802.

STORAGE: Frequent use helps prevent build-up of micro organisms in the filter. If the water filter is to be stored for a short term (weeks), it is suggested that you put the filter in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator. Growth of micro organisms in the water filter while stored can be further diminished by first flushing the unti with vinegar or a diluted bleach (1 tsp. household bleach to 1 gal. water). Either of these solutions can be easily be flushed out of the filter with fresh water prior to use. For longer term storage (2 months or more) the filter should be dried. FLush with vinager or bleach solution and then pump out excess water either manually (by blowing) or attach the adapter tube and utilize the pump. Apply pressure until fluid ceases to flow out of the filter. Allow the water filter to air dry in a warm place 5-7 days. Proper storage will enchance the life of your filter.

NOTE: Coghlan's water filter will remove parasites such as Giardia, tapeworm, etc. It will not protect against bacteria or viruses. If you have any reason to suspect such contamination, we recommend treatment of your filtered water with Coghlan's #C7620 Germicidal drinking water tablets.
